How do I properly care for my towels?

We answer you: Tips to keep them soft, fluffy and like new!
Towels are one of the most essential and personal linens in our homes. But because they are washed frequently and used daily, they need special care to stay fluffy, hygienic and durable. Here's how:
1. Washing: First use matters
Before using your new towels, wash them once at a low temperature (30–40°C), without fabric softener, to "activate" the fibers and remove any residues from packaging or production.
Tip: Add half a cup of vinegar or a little baking soda in the first wash — it will fix the color and enhance absorbency.
2. Fabric softener: In moderation or not at all
Although many consider it necessary, the fabric softener may reduce absorbency of the towels, creating a coating that "repels" water.
Tip: If you can't do without it, use a small amount and alternate with natural means (such as vinegar or eco-friendly softeners).
3. Washing temperature: Neither too hot nor too cold
The ideal temperature for most towels is 40°CIn cases of heavy use or for towels that need disinfection (e.g. gym towels), wash in 60°C, as long as the label allows it.
Avoid high temperatures systematically because they damage fibers and fade colors.
4. Drying: Balance between freshness & softness
Towels are becoming more fluffy in the dryer, but excessive use can wear them out. Alternatively, dry them of course, in a shady area with good ventilation.
Tip: If they dry in the sun, spread them out from the other side to protect the color.
5. Do not use bleach or strong detergents.
Bleach and harsh chemicals wear down fibers and make towels stiff over time. Prefer gentle detergents, preferably in liquid form.
6. Avoid overloading the washing machine
When washing multiple towels at once, don't overload the drum. They need room to move around and get cleaned properly. Wash towels without other clothes, especially without clothes with zippers or hooks that could injure them.
7. How do we keep towels fluffy?
- Shake the towels before hanging them out or putting them in the dryer
- Do not use an iron – it “kills” the texture
- Don't fold them when they are still fresh – only store when they are completely dry.
BONUS TIP: When do we change the towels?
Even with good care, towels wear out over time. If they have lost their absorbency, become smelly, or have lost their softness, it's time for renewal.
Conclusion:
Good care extends the life of towels and makes their daily use more enjoyable. With simple, natural methods and without excesses, you can preserve your towels clean, absorbent and fluffy for years!
